Pelvic Health for Women – a Feldenkrais® approach
February 1, 2015
1 to 5 p.m.
$80 at the door
In this workshop we will balance strength with release. The lessons are designed to integrate the movements of your pelvic floor with the movements of your whole self, as opposed to isolating the pelvic area. We will pay a lot of attention to breathing.
The workshop will be useful for birth preparation and recovery. It will also be helpful for women seeking to retain – or regain – pelvic health through menopause and beyond. Actors, athletes, dancers, singers and musicians will benefit from enhanced balance, flexibility and free and easy breathing.
What is Feldenkrais?
Central to the Feldenkrais method is awareness. Group lessons are called Awareness Through Movement. They are usually done lying on a mat, but can be adapted for sitting on a chair. You always stay within your comfort zone. Talking you through a series of pleasant and gentle movements, the teacher helps guide your attention. You may recognize elements from child development, martial arts, dance or yoga in the lessons, but the focus is always on how you feel, not the effect you create for an outsider to judge. Attention is spread through the whole of yourself, rather than focusing tightly on one area. This gives you an opportunity to discover deeply ingrained habits, and to create new possibilities that are safer, more sustainable, and more fun.
Maria Meindl MA, GCFP
During my first Feldenkrais lesson in the 1980s I was amazed by the changes in movement and perception that can happen when we “do less” and stay within a comfortable range. Later, I turned to Feldenkrais as the only effective way I could find of managing fibromyalgia, and still later, as a way to think more clearly and creatively, and to find more energy for the things I enjoy. I became a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner in 2004 and since then, have worked with a wide variety of individuals including those with fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s Disease and pelvic floor issues as well as dancers, athletes and musicians looking to improve their performance. I have an MA in Education and am also a writer and organizer of literary events in the Regent Park area. Please check my website for more information: www.bodylanguagejournal.wordpress.com
